NATHALIE MARTIN-SABON (1855-1931) (NÉE NATHALIE SCHÖNE )Castle of Cards, unique piece, 1907Exceptional card chest(s) consisting of an octagonal central body, evoking the main tower of a medieval castle, flanked by boxes, simulating but tresses. The central part opens through four doors and each wing opens with a sloping flap. Wooden frame entirely covered with leather with embossed, engraved, punched and, in part, polychrome and gilded decoration, playing cards depicting queens, valets and colours, as well as geometrical motifs and floral motifs. The slightly domed top part is decorated with phylacteries bearing Latin mottoes. The hinges, lock entries, slot frames, clasps and catch are made of very finely worked or forged metal and evoke, in a narrative context of medieval taste, the four colours of a deck of cards. The interiors, uncovered by the doors and other flaps, are entirely covered in leather. The underside, also trimmed in leather, receives a series of four metal feet under each of the buttresses forming boxes. Signed and dated N. MARTIN-SABON 1907, at the base of the central part. Height : 48 cmExhibition : Salon de la Société des artistes français, Paris, 1907 - This work was presented at this event . Bibliography : L'Art décoratif - January to June 1907 . History : Nathalie Martin-Sabon, painter, sculptor and bookbinder, enjoyed during her lifetime a great reputation in these different disciplines . The museums of Orsay and Gustave Moreau keep sumptuous bindings of her. The artist co-founded the Union des dames des Arts décoratifs. Born Schöne, she married Félix Martin-Sabon, who, an engineer by training, gave up his professional activity to devote himself mainly to the photography of historical monuments throughout France.
