HERBERT WARD (1863-1919) Young daughter of Lukolela, wood carrier, the model created in [1905]. Sculpture. Bronze print with dark brown patina. Antique cast iron. Signed Herbert WARD on the terrace and bears the stamp of Alexis RUDIER Fondeur Paris on the edge at the back of the terrace. Height : 46 cm Exhibitions : - Société des Peintres Orientalistes Français, 20th exhibition - Grand Palais, Paris, February 5 to 28, 1911. Similar work most probably presented under the title "Le fardeau" (The burden) under number 640 in the catalogue. - Exhibition of the Herbert Ward African collection - Smithsonian Institution, United States national museum, Washington. D.C., March 1922. A high version copy (74 cm) donated to the museum by the artist's widow in 1921 was exhibited at this event and cited under the title "Wood carrier" on page 6 of the catalogue. Museum : - One copy of this model, high version (74 cm) was donated to the Smithsonian's National Museum by the artist's widow in 1921, Mrs. Sarita Ward, and bears the inventory number 373-717. According to the information given by the widow at the time of the bequest, the model in Paris that Ward used for this sculpture was a young Senegalese woman and not a Congolese, as the title of the work would suggest. The entire collection of this exceptional gift, which constitutes The African Ward Collection, can now be seen at the Museum Support Center in Suitland, Maryland. - A 30 cm high plaster copy is kept in the collections of the AfricaMuseum in Tervuren under the inventory number HO.0.1.393.
