The Hotel Métropole, a Brussels institution
The foundations of the Hotel Métropole were laid in 1874, in the Brussels of the late 19th century. Designed by the architect Antoine Trappeniers, the building initially housed the Caisse Générale d'Epargne et de Retraite. It was then bought in 1891 by the Wielemans-Ceuppens brewery to present a selection of Brussels beers. In 1895, the bank and the café became a hotel, under the direction of the architect Alban Chambon. Originally from Italy but now living in France, he is one of the great representatives of historicism in architecture.
During its 130 years of existence, the Metropole has seen many personalities pass through its doors, including Paul Signac, Stéphane Mallarmé, Albert Einstein and Marie Curie. More recently, Clara Luciani took up residence there to shoot the video for her song "Nue", following in the footsteps of singers such as Jacques Brel and Annie Cordy, who have also stayed at this Belgian hotel institution.
After more than a century, it is time for the mythical building to open a new page in its history. Rattan chairs from the terrace of the Café Métropole, the Café bar, naturalized peacocks, and the emblematic upholstered armchairs and benches of the Hotel will convince both 20th century enthusiasts and regular guests of this mythical institution, witness to a bygone era.
