Giulio DI STURCO (b. 1979) Bhairab Railway Bridge, Banglades - Lot 6
Giulio DI STURCO (b. 1979) Bhairab Railway Bridge, Bangladesh 2015 Fine art print on Hahnemühle PhotoRag satin paper, framed with AR 1/9 + 2AP glass, GdS19 60 x 60 cm Work sold with certificate of authenticity. Bhairab Railway Bridge, Bangladesh "Ganga Ma (Mother Ganges) is the culmination of a ten-year research project. Since 2005, Di Sturco has followed the course of the Ganges for over 2,500 km, from its source as snow in the Himalayan glaciers to Bangladesh, where it flows into the sea in the Bay of Bengal. Much more than just a river, the Ganges represents for Hindus the pivot of spirituality. Paradoxically, today it is one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Much of Di Sturco's work focuses on the future, the evolution of societies and man's adaptation to environmental pressures and technological change. With Ganga Ma, the photographer paints a poetic and disquieting portrait of the river, up close and personal, through images that move back and forth between the detachment of documentary photography and an aesthetic pictorial response to the ecological and atmospheric conditions of the Ganges. The choice of India's most sacred and revered river as the subject of this long-term project ultimately compels us to profoundly rethink our complex interconnection with the environment and the way we envisage our place and action in the world. While Ganga Ma began as a documentary project to bear witness to an ongoing ecological disaster, Di Sturco has gradually created a visual language capable of evoking a near future by showing us its seeds in the present, and thus enabling us to perceive a toxic, post-apocalyptic world."
