Yves ZURSTRASSEN (b. 1956) 191214 SIESTA 2020 Silkscreen Ex 20-06 60 x 60 cm Oak frame box glass Yves Zurstrassen (b. 1956, Liège, Belgium) is a self-taught painter who has been redefining the language of abstraction for over four decades.
Known for his experimental techniques and dynamic compositions, Zurstrassen combines spontaneity with meticulous craftsmanship, creating works that resonate with rhythm and artistic gesture, while retaining a profound sense of temporality. His approach, rooted in abstraction, nevertheless transcends these traditional boundaries, drawing inspiration from lyrical abstraction, abstract expressionism and the unstructured improvisations of free jazz. At the heart of his practice is a unique process combining collage, decollage and contemporary digital tools. Using stencils made from perforated paper, designed through computer calculations, he superimposes layers of paint, applies the stencils, then removes them, revealing fragments of the previous layers. This interplay of addition and removal creates a complex visual archaeology, where the final visible elements often mirror the first layers applied, imprisoning time on the canvas.
Over the years, Zurstrassen's work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums around the world, including the Musée Picasso in Antibes and Bozar in Brussels. He is represented by renowned galleries such as Baronian (Brussels), Xippas (Paris, Geneva, Punta del Este) and Ceysson & Bénétière (New York, Paris, Geneva, Luxembourg, Saint-Étienne, Tokyo).
