French Lines, 160 years of maritime legend: Posters, Tableware, Promotional items - Part II
ONLINE Sale
Closing on Monday December 2, 2024 from 11am
French Lines & Compagnies is an Établissement Public de Coopération culturelle created in 2017. Its purpose is to safeguard, conserve and promote the heritage of the French Merchant Navy and its Compagnies Maritimes. This heritage represents 6.5 linear km of archives, 32,000 objects and 80,000 photographs, covering a period from 1860 to 1980.
This impressive heritage tells the story of the French Merchant Navy through the Compagnies Maritimes Françaises: in particular, the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique, the Compagnie des Messageries Maritimes, the Compagnie Générale Maritime, the Société Nationale Corse-Méditerranée, as well as the Chargeurs Réunis and Delmas-Vieljeux.
Aware of the economic interest that the overabundance of certain holdings could represent, the CGM decided to create an alienable section and therefore to remove them from the heritage section, given the very large number of these objects and documents in the inalienable collections. The French Line association, which has managed this heritage for many years, has continued in the same spirit.
This is why we can now offer these objects and documents for sale, without of course taking anything away from the French Lines heritage collection. The fact remains, however, that these objects are linked to maritime history and reflect a bygone era, that of the great ocean liners, and in particular the transatlantic line, which was so important in Le Havre.
