NORWEGIAN WORK CIRCA 1900 - DRAGESTIL MOVEMENT - PANELS CARVED AFTER GERHARD MUNTHE (1849-1929) The god Heimdall, with his horn and the valkyries Gondul and Skogul riding in the kingdom of the dead (Valhalla) Tall buffet in stained Norway spruce. The paneled lower part opens with a door receiving a sculpted and polychromed bas-relief based on an illustration by Gerhard Munthe taken from the 1899 prestige edition of The Saga of the Kings of Norway (Heimskringla) by the medieval author Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241), largely illustrated by the artist. The upper part has a niche in between and opens with a curved glass door. The pediment, the glass frame and the in-between are with carved Dragestil motifs; the side parts are also with carved Dragestil motifs. Condition in use. Height: 227.5 cm - Length: 85 cm - Depth: 60 cm Museum and related work: Gerhard Munthe's original design for this illustration which inspired the leaf decoration is kept at the Nasjonalmuseet for kunst, arkitektur og design in Oslo under inventory number NG.K&H.B.07219.
