From the Monnaie de Paris: Objects and decorations from the "Insert Coin" exhibition

Online sale

Closing on Tuesday, July 2, 2024 from 11 a.m.

La Monnaie de Paris is the oldest institution in France and one of the oldest companies in the world. It was in 864, with the promulgation of the Edict of Pîtres, that Charles II - known as the Bald - decided to create a Parisian mint attached to the Crown, in addition to eight other mints in the provinces.

The only workshop in France to produce without interruption since its creation, the Parisian workshop established itself during the Ancien Régime as the leading workshop in the kingdom. In 1691, twenty-seven mints dotted the country. By 1870, only three remained: Bordeaux, Paris and Strasbourg. Since 1878, only the Monnaie de Paris has remained active.

The Insert Coin exhibition highlights a forgotten aspect of coin history: its use in coin-operated entertainment machines - jukeboxes, foosball tables, pinball machines and other video game terminals. These different types of machine enjoyed their heyday in the second half of the 20th century, when they became a popular pastime for young people. Hundreds of thousands of them were installed in France, mainly in cafés and bistros.

This exhibition invites you to (re)discover these machines and their history through a chronological tour of rooms, by decade, starting in the 1950s. Each room shows a selection of representative machines for its period, surrounded by objects and visuals evoking the atmosphere of cafés and bistros during that decade.
