Annette MESSAGER (b. 1943) Avec nos doigts, 2023 Acrylic on - Lot 14
Annette MESSAGER (b. 1943) Avec nos doigts, 2023 Acrylic on Arches paper The work is dated, signed and titled on the back. 49 x 48 cm Sold with certificate of authenticity. French visual artist. Annette Messager's father introduced her to ancient and religious art, as well as Dubuffet's Art Brut. This interest in folk and artisanal art, in madness and childhood, remained a constant, as did the influences of Goya, Ensor, Soutine and Bacon, who present grotesque figures of the human condition. In 1962, she entered the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Her first works were house-shaped boxes inspired by Surrealism and Louise Nevelson. While the influence of Claes Oldenburg and hisStores is obvious, the irony is specifically focused on the figure of the woman as social myth. She produced 56 private pseudo-albums, adopting different personas: that of a midinette (Le Mariage de MlleAnnette Messager, 1971), that of the "practical woman" (Mes travaux d'aiguille, 1973, Musée de Grenoble). Practicing a blatant form of autofiction, she deconstructs both the categories of "woman" and "artist". The artistic act is often reduced to obsessive copying or ironic embroidery, as inMa collection de proverbes(1974), an anthology of preconceived ideas about women.
