Previously a landscape craftsman, an ultra-talented tree pruner and a tree lover to the point of wanting to be reincarnated as a squirrel, Marc Nucera rejects the notion that trees are worthless once they're dead. With his chainsaw as his only tool, he transforms the dead tree, giving a new thrill to its material, erasing its austerity, allowing it to continue its cycle by transforming it into a new work of art. For the past 30 years, Marc Nucera has been training in his studio garden in Noves, near Avignon, to acquire "gesture formulas". Working with a chainsaw is tiring, and the gesture demanding. But if Marc Nucera says he's exhausted at the end of his work, it's because of his creation, because of the forces transmitted by the material that took hold of him and inspired him, that he's as if emptied. What we love about Marc Nucera's work is his osmosis with the tree, his love of wood and its softness, its scent, the way it captures the warmth of light. Trees are the power of life.
