Amos GITAI (b. 1950) Manifestant pour la paix, #7 2016 Clay - Lot 41
Amos GITAI (b. 1950) Manifestant pour la paix, #7 2016 Clay 10 x 15 cm The assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995, at the end of a peace demonstration in el-Aviv, inspired several of Amos Gitai's works: documentaries, fiction, plays, multimedia installations and sculptures. The aim is always to question the way in which art, in its various forms, can give an account of a major historical event. In 2016, as part of his installation "Yitzhak Rabin: chronique d'un assassinat" at the Fondation Lambert in Avignon, 2016, he presented a series of figurines entitled "Manifestants pour la paix" at the Fondation Lambert in Avignon. The series was subsequently exhibited at the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Museo Reina Sofia, Madrid. Amos Gitai was born in 1950 in Haifa, Israel. The son of a Bauhaus-trained architect, Munio Weinraub, who fled Nazism in 1933, and an intellectual and teacher, Efratia Gitai, a non-religious biblical scholar born in Palestine at the beginning of the 20th century, he was part of the first generation born after the founding of the State of Israel, a generation also shaped by the great youth movements of the 1960s. These biographical, familial and generational elements, together with the trauma of war and a sense of victorious life, were to inspire all his future work.
