VENITIAN SCHOOL circa 1600, follower of Paris BORDONE - Lot 89
VENITIAN SCHOOL circa 1600, follower of Paris BORDONE Mars and Venus Canvas Height : 177 cm Width : 121 cm This painting was intended as a wedding gift for a couple personified here by Mars and Venus. The "puer mignens" or "putto mictans" is a theme taken from the ancient texts of Catullus and Statius, and is common on Roman sarcophagi and vases. It reappeared during the Renaissance, notably in fountain sculptures, and among humanist painters (Mantegna, Titian, Lorenzo Lotto - Metropolitan Museum). A parody of the sexual act, it symbolizes happy union, vitality, fertility and expected fecundity. Old restorations We would like to thank the Cabinet Turquin for its expertise on this painting.
